Chapter Guest LAURAINE SNELLING: Feb 27

ACFW Portland Chapter meets Monday, February 27 at 6:30 pm. Please Note: We are meeting at Northside Baptist Church, 5201 NE Minnehaha St. Vancouver, where we met in November. (Directions follow at the end of the post.)

Our guest will be Lauraine Snelling. She will speak on The Stories Behind the Stories:

We write fiction but sometimes the stories of our adventures in getting the stories we are writing are fun to share and learn from. Where do books and ideas come about and how do they develop? Lauraine will share what she has seen and done, and then we can all chat and help each other. Be prepared to laugh and cry. That's what fiction writing is all about.

About Lauraine:
Today, Lauraine Snelling is a member of the more than Two Million Books In Print club, but when she first began, she was a mother of three teenagers with a simple dream to write “horse books for kids.”

Her dreams manifested into reality in 1982 with Tragedy on the Toutle, a story about a girl and her horse caught in the eruption of Mt. St. Helens in Washington state. Lauraine continued the dream, publishing two more best-selling series: High Hurdles and The Golden Filly, and expanded into writing inspirational romances for adults.

Her Norwegian heritage spurred her to craft An Untamed Land, volume one of the Red River of the North family saga and a trilogy called Return to Red River. Due to reader demand she is currently working on a new Bjorklund series called Daughters of Blessing. Three more historical sets have followed, one set during the Civil War which traced the journey of a young woman leading Thoroughbreds across the country to safety, and a series called Dakotah Treasures.

Writing about real issues within a compelling story is a hallmark of Lauraine’s style, shown in her contemporary romances and women’s fiction which has probed the issues of forgiveness, loss, domestic violence and cancer. In her novel, The Way of Women, three women delve deep into their hearts as they encounter a volcanic eruption and prove that when women strive together they can face even the unthinkable. In The Brushstroke Legacy, three generations of women discover that God’s gifts are powerful enough to speak across centuries.

All told, she has over 50 books published. She thinks. She’s not sure. She’d rather write them than count them. Lauraine’s work has been translated into Norwegian, Danish and German as well as produced as books on tape.
